Abstrak

The process of teaching Arabic reading in most schools and institutes in Indonesia, especially as noted by the researcher in the Department of Religious Sciences at the State Islamic Secondary School Mataram II, is still in the traditional way using or using classic books, such as the book of jurisprudence, interpretation, grammar and morphology, and others. This is what makes students' thoughts rigid, so their knowledge is about jurisprudential terms, their origins, interpretation, and others. This leads them to not be familiar with the new contemporary terms that are often used in this era, especially in newspapers and magazines.
This research aims to identify the effectiveness of using written media in developing Arabic reading skills among students in the Department of Religious Sciences at the Islamic State Religious Secondary School, Mataram II, the most important of which is the skill of understanding detailed information (text content), understanding the main ideas in sentences, and introducing them to contemporary Arabic terminology. The method used in this research is experimental, with a pre- and post-test design in one group. The independent variable in this research is teaching Arabic reading using written media to develop Arabic reading material, and the dependent variable is developing students’ understanding of the Arabic reading skill (reading comprehension).
After the researcher presented the data, then analyzed and discussed it previously, he concluded the following results: 1) The use of written media in teaching Arabic reading, which the researcher had prepared in terms of its implementation, is appropriate to the level of university students and the subjects studied. 2) The use of written media in teaching Arabic reading to students in the Department of Religious Sciences at the Second Governmental Islamic Secondary School is effective and has a fundamental impact.
